How Shaking can Help to Discharge Stress — My Wellness Journey with TRE

My first experience with TRE was with Tammy Hayano, TRE facilitator and leader of Mindful Yoga & Wellness Retreat hosted at Museflower Retreat & Spa back in in April 2015.

What is TRE?

TRE stands for Tension-trauma releasing exercises.

Quoting from Tammy, TRE is “a simple technique that creates a natural response for your body to remove blocks deep within your cellular level. TRE uses seven exercises to release the psoas muscle, the deepest and largest muscle in the body. This powerful muscle holds physical, emotional, and mental stress that we carry in our bodies over the course of our lives.”

In other words, these tension-trauma releasing exercises help us to ‘shake’, and this ‘shaking’ can be very healing.

Why shake?

Our hands shake naturally when we are nervous or afraid. We shook and trembled when we were kids — but we ‘learned’ to control our emotions because that’s what grown-ups do. We control our shaking and trembling, because we don’t want other people to see us as weak and vulnerable. We want to present a strong and confident self, ALL the time.

I know for myself that when I am very angry or upset at someone, when I shout or yell at time or argue with someone, my voice shakes. My hands tremble. My whole body vibrates.

I know for myself that when I did get into tiny car accident a few years ago, my entire body shook and I was petrified and shocked.

So I know it is true, when we tremble and shake, it’s not that something is wrong with us, it just indicates something is off balance, and by shaking and releasing the energy off, this act helps to re-balance us and unlocks and releases the emotions that are stuck in our energetic field.

What Happened to me in TRE?

Tammy briefly introduced what TRE was about at the beginning of the session and I was excited to see what happened.

The exercises were simple indeed. We did seven types of exercises to fatigue different muscles but these were not strenuous exercises.

“The goal was to do enough so you feel your muscles tiring but not till the point that you become completely exhausted”, Tammy explained.

After we finished the exercises, we were instructed to lie on the floor in a certain position and allowed for the trembling to happen on its own.

It sure did.

My knees and inner thighs started to shake and I was happy to let the body intelligence take over. I closed my eyes and allowed it to happen.

Suddenly I observed the kind of emotions that were surfacing through the shaking. It was really interesting because I was not feeling angry, but I saw angry thoughts about other people and myself surfaced. Then I saw sad thoughts passing through my mind like I was watching a movie.

Finally I understood what people talked about for meditation, but it didn’t happen for me during meditation, it happened for me during TRE.

These thoughts came and went on their own way. I didn’t even try to grasp onto these emotions or dwell with them. They just surfaced and they disappeared.

I know, deep down inside, something just got unstuck.

I actually had tears. I was not feeling sad. But I was reminded again to completely trust and surrender to the Universe. I remembered how I got to where I was at the first place. I remember all the love that is surrounded us, we just have to be open to receive.

Conclusion

The entire experience was subtle yet powerful. It wasn’t like a big ‘aha’ moment. But something changed in a deeper level, more than what my mind could understand. And I would definitely do it again.

Tammy’s Thoughts on TRE:

“It’s been over two years since I first started practicing TRE, and what a journey it’s been! It’s been fascinating to witness how my body awareness has grown, what the body’s intelligence is capable of, and how much healing can happen when we truly allow the space.

As a yoga retreat leader, I think TRE offers participants another opportunity to release the mental, emotional, and physical stress that we carry in our body.

It adds another tool for well-being, healing from the inside to create a healthy self on the outside — our relationship, jobs, lifestyle, and choices.”
